Essential Checklist For Preparing Your Next Submission

Scientific manuscript pages, figures and a submission-readiness checklist.

A manuscript can be complete without being ready for submission. The experiments may be finished and every section drafted, yet the paper can still fail at the level that matters most: the scientific argument.

Before opening the submission portal, read the manuscript as an editor or reviewer would. Is the central claim identifiable? Does the evidence support it directly? Are the limits of the study stated plainly? A final assessment at this level is more valuable than another round of sentence polishing.

State the central claim in one sentence

Write down the main claim without consulting the abstract. It should identify the finding, the system in which it was observed and the evidence on which it rests. A useful working form is:

We show that [finding] occurs in [system or context], supported by [decisive evidence], with implications for [specific scientific question].

This sentence need not appear verbatim in the paper. Its purpose is diagnostic. If the claim requires a paragraph of qualifications, several competing messages or evidence that appears only in the supplementary material, the argument may still be too diffuse.

The title, abstract, results and discussion should express the same central finding at different levels of detail. They should not offer four slightly different versions of the paper.

Test the chain from question to conclusion

A readable manuscript has a traceable line of reasoning. The introduction defines a problem that is not yet resolved. The study design addresses that problem. The results present the relevant observations, and the discussion explains what those observations allow the authors to conclude.

Question: What specific uncertainty does the study address?

Approach: Why is the experimental or analytical design appropriate?

Evidence: Which results provide the decisive support?

Inference: What conclusion follows, and where are its limits?

Breaks in this chain are common. An introduction may promise a mechanistic explanation while the experiments establish only an association. A discussion may broaden the conclusion beyond the population, model or conditions that were studied. These are scientific problems, not stylistic ones.

Let the figures carry the evidence

In many research papers, the figures provide the clearest account of what was done and found. Read them in sequence without the main text. The progression should still be intelligible.

For each figure, verify that:

  • the figure addresses a defined question or analytical step;
  • the principal comparison is visually clear;
  • axes, units, symbols and experimental groups are identified;
  • sample sizes and the meaning of error bars are stated;
  • statistical tests are appropriate and reported accurately;
  • essential controls are presented alongside the result they support; and
  • the legend allows the figure to be understood without searching through the methods.

More panels do not necessarily produce a stronger paper. Remove panels that repeat the same point, and reconsider whether evidence central to the main claim has been placed in supplementary material.

Separate observation from interpretation

Results should first establish what was observed. Interpretation belongs where the evidence can be weighed against alternative explanations, prior work and the limitations of the design.

Pay particular attention to causal language. An association does not establish mechanism. A change observed in one model does not automatically apply across systems. The verbs used in the manuscript should reflect the strength of the evidence: shows, supports, is consistent with and suggests are not interchangeable.

The same discipline applies to negative results. Failure to detect an effect may constrain an interpretation, but its meaning depends on statistical power, measurement sensitivity and experimental design.

Read the manuscript at three scales

Editing only at sentence level can improve fluency while leaving the scientific structure untouched. A more reliable review proceeds at three scales:

  1. The whole paper. Compare the title, abstract, final introduction paragraph and discussion conclusion. They should define the same question and support the same principal claim.
  2. Each section and paragraph. Every results subsection should advance the argument. Every paragraph should have one clear function and connect logically to the next.
  3. Each sentence. Identify the actor and action, remove unnecessary qualifiers, keep terminology consistent and place important information where readers can find it.

Technical language is often necessary. Unnecessary complexity is not. A specialist reader should not have to reconstruct the argument from long sentences, undefined abbreviations or shifts in terminology.

Choose the journal by scientific fit

Journal selection should begin with the intended readership and the scale of the claim. Examine the journal’s scope, recent papers, article formats and evidential expectations. Impact metrics alone provide little guidance on whether editors will consider the work appropriate for their audience.

Consider whether the paper offers the level of conceptual advance, technical depth and breadth expected by the journal. Also check practical requirements: word limits, figure limits, reporting checklists, data policies and supplementary-file formats.

The cover letter should make the case for fit briefly. It can identify the scientific problem, the principal advance and the reason the journal’s readers would care. It should not simply repeat the abstract.

Complete the scientific record

A manuscript is not ready if a reader cannot determine how the work was performed or how the conclusions were reached. Before submission, review the methods and associated declarations with the same care given to the results.

Confirm that the submission includes, where applicable:

  • sufficient methodological detail to assess and reproduce the work;
  • complete descriptions of biological and technical replicates;
  • definitions of exclusion criteria and analytical decisions;
  • software, package versions and analysis parameters;
  • data, code and materials availability statements;
  • ethics approvals, consent statements and trial registration details;
  • authorship contributions and agreement from all authors;
  • competing-interest and funding declarations; and
  • accurate references to the relevant primary literature.

Requirements vary between journals and disciplines. The instructions for the selected journal should therefore be checked directly rather than inferred from a previous submission.

A final submission check

  • The research question and principal claim can each be stated clearly.
  • The title and abstract represent the evidence without exaggeration.
  • The order of the results follows the scientific argument.
  • Every main figure contributes directly to a stated result.
  • Figure legends define groups, sample sizes and statistical notation.
  • Interpretation is distinguished from observation.
  • Conclusions remain within the limits of the design and data.
  • Important limitations and alternative explanations are addressed.
  • Methods and statistical procedures are reported completely.
  • Data, code, ethics and competing-interest statements are included.
  • All authors have reviewed and approved the submitted version.
  • The complete submission has been checked against the journal’s current instructions.

A final uninterrupted read remains useful, but it should come after these scientific checks. Read once for the argument, once for the evidence and once for the submission record. Only then return to grammar and formatting.

Submission readiness is not defined by perfect prose. It is reached when the paper presents a coherent claim, provides the evidence needed to evaluate it and states clearly what the study does—and does not—establish.
